Journal 6 Reflection on Overall Experience
My field experience had its ups and downs. As you know, I had a few disagreements with Mrs. Palmer’s teaching style that reflected in some of her students’ behavior and their expectations of the class. Looking past all of the differences with Mrs. Palmer’s style, I loved working with the students. My favorite part of teaching is working with students one on one. This gives me a chance to assess where they are and also get to know them, especially the quieter students. If they are called on in front of the class, they tend to freeze. This does not necessarily mean they do not understand the concept; they just have a higher affective filter than others and prefer to keep to themselves. These students are fun to work with individually because I can tell they get excited to show what they know.
It was sometimes hard for me to write quizzes or activities for the class to do just because I was not sure of what vocabulary they have already had. Part of the problem with the oral activity in French 2 was that a lot of it was unfamiliar vocabulary that I assumed they would have learned already. As a result, I spent a lot of time helping them translate instead of them conversing with their partner. As I discussed in my survey, I would have gone through the worksheet as a class prior to them doing it as partners to ensure that everyone knew the vocabulary used.
My favorite group to work with was fourth hour (French 1). All of the students got along really well so the class had great chemistry and they loved working together. They were all very enthusiastic and were a lot of fun to work with. They presented their performance assessments on the last day of my filed experience. It was fun to see their personalities and sense of humor come out in their projects.
